I make video and performance using DIY techniques, improvisation and collaboration. ‘Animating’ a thing (a material, an idea) is often the starting point for how I make which has deliberate echoes of the dark humour, surrealism and political dimension of Jan Swankmajer, an artist who has had a profound influence on me. I often use interviews and workshops to draw from others’ personal experiences of the forces (typically oppressive forces) that shape our everyday lives: urban regeneration, for example, or UK immigration processes. The stories I tell feel disjointed. Their narrative worlds are porous. Elements seem at odds with one another as if they disagree. These are all sensations I embrace and offer as emblematic of the conversations that happen as part of the process. My work has been shown as part of exhibitions, screenings, concert programmes and online platforms, a selection of which are collected here. I also make music, released with Bulkwash; I write and I teach.
